Dead To Me - A (very) Short Story

Image
I hear the front door close, the clang of your keys as you drop them into your pocket. My peaceful afternoon is about to end, just as soon as you’ve taken off your shoes, checked the mail, poked your head into the sitting room, slammed the kettle with your dismay and laid your disbelief upon the naked kitchen table. I can almost hear you tally your point score as you climb the stairs to my studio—THE attic, as you call it—and I should brace for your arrival, but I don’t give a damn. That creaky top stair denies you your stealthy approach, yet I act as if you will still catch me unawares. The square of blue above my head holds my attention, patchy and ragged as if the skylight were a giant phone and the sky a wash painted by a clumsy finger. “I bet you do that all day.” I fake a start, as usual, and spin my chair so my back is fully to you. If you could manage as much as a civil ‘hi’, I’d respond in kind. But the kindness has all gone. We are embittered, estranged echoes of our past....

Bookkeeping (punny) - Hiding Behind The Couch #amwriting

Image
I posted my author 'review' for Those Jeffries Boys on Goodreads yesterday. The book came out back in May this year, but it was only when I posted the review that I discovered a couple of readers of HBTC had missed it. Sorry about that! So, I thought I'd write a quick update on the Hiding Behind The Couch series – as a whole, and where I'm up to with writing. All of the titles (except Reunions ) are links to the Beaten Track listings, where you will find the links to order from your favoured vendor. Most recent additions: The Wag and The Scoundrel – 22/09/16 Those Jeffries Boys – 26/05/16 Chain of Secrets – 14/02/16 Upcoming releases: Class-A – 01/12/16 Reunions – TBC That's where I'm up to with writing. Reunions is about half written, maybe. It's currently around 106,000 words (I have no end goal on word count – when it's done, it's done), but it's a bit all over the place. This year has been a tough one for finding bloc...

In The Stars...most definitely!

I've spent sixteen hours typesetting the paperback and formatting the ebook for In The Stars Part II today. Am I inefficient? Maybe. Or perhaps it's down to the 210k, 572 page, fifty-five chapter leviathan I spawned... (yes, you read that correctly) Better still (or worse yet), this is only the second half of the story of In The Stars , which spans a year in the life of The Circle - the nine characters around which the Hiding Behind The Couch series revolves. The full story consists of the 105 chapters below - around 1,150 pages and something like 384,000 words. Which is, of course, why I'm releasing it not only in two volumes , but also as twelve separate episodes . Each episode is released in the month in which the related zodiac sign falls, so the first six episodes are already available (at time of writing). It doesn't have much else to do with astrology, to be honest, although the themes of religious beliefs, science, fate and fortune are key. I...
